Year 2

Welcome to Grade 2 at Pearcedale Primary School.

Grade 2 is a very exciting year as the students continue to build on and consolidate their knowledge in all areas of the curriculum.

Students begin each day by changing their reading level books and reading independently or to their teacher then move into Literacy block which includes Reading, Writing and Spelling. Students participate in Reading Strategy lessons where they develop their strategies such as predicting, identifying the main idea, summarising, making inferences and retelling. They also participate in CLOSE Reading lessons where students critically analyse short, complex texts with a focus on oral language. Students are introduced to SMART spelling (a systematic teaching of spelling patterns), a program in which students continue with until Grade 6. Students are explicitly taught using the 6+1 Traits of Writing which includes explicit teaching of ideas (development of message), organisation (structure of piece), voice (tone of writer), word choice (vocabulary), sentence fluency, conventions (spelling and grammar) and presentation (how the piece will be published). It is during Grade 2 where students are introduced to the Writer’s Workshop. Students will be introduced to the cycle of writing which includes prewriting (development of ideas), drafting (writing in rough form), Revising (feedback from peers and teacher and continues to develop piece), editing (cleaning up the piece checking for errors and the final stage publishing. Students will be able to move through these stages at their own pace while accessing teacher guidance through mini conferences and check in sessions.

In Numeracy, students are engaged in hands on and game-based activities that encourage them to apply their expanding knowledge to real life number problems. They work collaboratively with their peers to solve problems and practise their mental and written mathematical skills.

Wellbeing is a big focus at PPS which is complimented by our weekly Respectful Relationship lessons, where children learn and discuss strategies to ensure equality within our school and the wider community. They do this through fun activities, games and role play.

Students will participate in all the Specialist classes on offer at PPS as well as Grade 2 sport. They have the opportunity to attend incursions, excursions and lunchtime activity groups.
